The New Jim Crow

Why did I select this book?

I have selected this book because it talks about racism in America.

The author name is Michelle Alexander.

What is the title?

“The new Jim Crow”

The new Press, New York, 2012, published this book in the United State. Distributed by Perseus Distribution.

The New Jim Crow

This book talks about how during the Jim Crow era, African Americans were unable to vote due to laws that were made up to prevent them from doing so. These laws and regulations included literacy test, taxes on the polls, and felon disenfranchisement laws. There was also a grandfather clause that allowed whites who did not fit all of the criteria to vote because their ancestors had been able to do so before them. After the fall of the Jim Crow, most of these means of eliminating blacks from voting disappeared through various new laws and changes to old ones. Some courts however, still have allowed for these laws to be allowed and this causes many difficulties for African Americans to be able to vote, especially since the black population is “disproportionately charges with felonies” (pg. 192).Another aspect that was mentioned in the reading is that due to the fact that blacks are more likely to be prosecuted and placed in prison, there are prisons build in rural white communities. Since this happens, these communities are able to have more representatives (that are white) from their community and less in more urban areas because the black “felons” are sent to the prisons in rural areas.

When he returned to America the first person he saw it was his mother. After that, when they want to go to their home, his mother saw her friend.  He heard news about what happened in Nepal about the Maoist attacks and the Royal Nepalese Army’s counterattacks in the Radio. Moreover, when his mother left to the Florida, his friend called him every night. After a few days, he wants to find the job because he wants to stay in America. He wrote in the final section of his resume about “Little Princes Children’s Home, Nepal, Volunteer”. After that, he sent the message to Viva by e-mail because he wants to back to Nepal and he buys the ticket for travel and he put the plan for his travel. He lists his plan steps and he went to Kathmandu. After Kathmandu, he went to Nepal. In addition, he learned a lot of things about Nepal. Conor Grennan traveled to Nepal again after several years and he did not tell the children about his coming. Moreover, He worked in Nepal when the children went to the school.

When Conor Grennan comes to Nepal again, it has already years past. Conor determines to find those seven lost kids, and to give them a safe place called “home”. It is a rather difficult mission for this young American to find seven Nepali kids in an alien country, especially in a country which is suffering from uprising and food shortage. Luckily, Conor is not the only one trying to save those starving kids. Viva, Jacky and Gyan in especial, as well as the other fellows of the Umbrella Foundation, offer him great help during his finding of the seven kids. Liz, a like-minded American girl, also encourages Conor to keep on and shares his bitterness and happiness as an E-pal. All of Conor’s endeavors and efforts finally push the whole thing into a happy trend. Amite and other four boys, five in total of those seven lost kids are continuously found in the other villages. At the end of my reading this time, Conor could eventually take a two hours sweet nap and share a peace moment with these skinny but brave little children.  Initially, he was reluctant to volunteer because he was not certain on whether he had any appropriate competence, or the required passion, to be involved with a country which was experiencing civil war. However, he was soon convinced by a number of resilient children who often challenged him and rewarded him more than he would expect (Grennan 137). Conor learnt that those children were not orphans but had been taken by child traffickers who had promised their families to take them to safety because of the war for a big amount of fee. These traffickers would then later abandon these children far from their homes along the Nepal’s capital (Grennan 143).What began as an adventure for Conor, became a commitment to reunite those kids with their families. Conor had grown fond of these kids, but the task of reuniting them with their families wasn’t going to be easy. He had to risk his own life through a journey faced by the dangers of the civil war along the Nepal Mountains. There was a Woman back at Kathmandu who waited for him hoping that he would arrive before the snow could trap him. This woman eventually became his wife (Grennan 148). Little Princes is not only a true story but enjoyable. It shows how much one is capable of doing when faced by extreme problems. Little Princes is quite a hilarious story that reveals how strong faith and love can take us through issues that are beyond our expectation.

Analysis
Conor wrote about some events in the third part of this book. The first part of chapter three shows a story about how he returned from American, and he explained about the feeling when he saw his mother. He heard about the attacks in Nepal in the Radio. After his mother left to Florida, he sent a message to Viva by e-mail telling her that he wants to come back to Nepal. He bought the ticket, and before he went to Nepal he went to Kathmandu. In the second part of chapter three the author shows the events about when he arrived to Nepal it was one year from when he traveled. He found a job in Nepal and started working while the kids were at school. Conor promised to find the seven lost children, and give them a safe home. It seems impossible mission for Conor to find these children in country which is suffering from uprising and food shortage. Conor was lucky, because he wasn’t alone Viva, Jacky and Gyan in especial, as well as the other fellows of the Umbrella Foundation. They were willing to help him to find these children. Liz also supported him to keep searching for these kids. Conor continued to search for the children, from seven children he found five of them. At the end, thios whole mission was not easy while he had to risk his life but he successfully returned the children with their families. While he was in his trip around the mountain there was a woman at Kathmandu who was waiting for him, she was hoping that he arrive before the snow. In the end this woman became his wife.

Read web addresses (URL)

What does URL means?

URL stands for “Uniform Resource Locators”.  URLs give the users the address to receive and send information through the Internet.

URL has four parts:

1 -Type of transfer:  this part shows us what kind of information is being transferred

A)     http

B)      gopher

C)      ftp

D)     news

2-Servername.domain: “The second part of the URL tells you where a Web site resides”. The second part also tells you where the information coming from “educational (.edu) institution or commercial (.com) service”.

3- Directories and subdirectories: This part shows us where that page coming from.

4-Filename.filetype:  this part shows the names about what kind of document the user looking for. For example:

A)     “.html or .htm: hypertext (this is standard for the Web)”

B)      “.gif, .jpg, .bmp: image types (formats of visual images)”

C)      “.zip, .tar: compressed files (these files will be downloaded onto your hard drive; your computer may not be able to interpret them, and you may need to get an "unzipping" utility)”

Little princes
The book little princes recounts the real life events and experiences of Conor Grennan. He exchanges his day to job for a trip across the world. He begins his trip with the war torn Nepal where he visits an orphanage, little princes. Though reluctant to settle in the insecure third world country, the children compel him to remain. His stay in the country turns into a life-threatening mission as he unearths a child trafficking cartel that is exploiting poor village families in the guise of providing safe and secure home for their children in the war-torn villages only to abandon the poor children in the city. In the process of reconnecting the destitute children with their families, Conor meets a woman falls in love and marries. As a family, they devote their lives to serving the impoverished and war torn society by rejoining the children to their families back in the villages.

The author develops a realistic plot since the story follows his life events. Though unimaginable, the actions in the book are achievable. He uses simple sentences with the view of increasing readership as he target the public. He uses a descriptive language among other key stylistic devices. In clear and simple sentences, he describes the events clearly thus developing a natural conflict that sustains the story. Since the events are real life, they are realistic and in deed possible only a little dramatic since the author employs such devices as hyperbole and suspense to heighten the action. In retrospect, the book is interesting and in deed entertaining and I must read for any student of history and the general public as an entertainer. I thought this book is not useful and boring, but after reviewing it I realized it is a great book I would recommend it to my friends to read it. I saw the pictures from website, and it helps me to understand the author feeling about the children. This book is one of the best book that I have read.

1- pages 6-7 initial reasons to go to Nepal.

Conor Grennan, he Irish-American, herealized that he wasn’t doing anything new, so he thought about change his lifestyle. He wanted to do something different. He was single, and had no kids or had a plan to get married.  He was saving some money of his income over the years. So he decided rapidly to pack his bags to take a trip around the world. His friends and family did not encourage him about his decision, but Conor was very confident about his decision, because he really wanted to take that adventure.

2- pages 53-55 later reasons to back to Nepal.

Conor Grennan, promised the kids that he would come back after he finished his big trip. He wanted to come back for the kids, because he felt like he was a father to them. He promised the kids that he is coming back after one year.

3- A comparison of initial and later reasons.

First, in the initial reasons Conor Grennan planed to go to the Nepal, because he was satisfied about the same routine he was doing. And he wanted to do something value of his life. Second in the later reasons he wanted to back to Nepal, because he promised the kids that he is coming back, and because he felt like he is a father to the kids. And he love the little prince.
